he/they

Primary Genres: Sometimes I still write poems and post them on social media, much to the chagrin of my friends. I have written a lot of analytic philosophy which I try (and mostly fail) to make less boring than it sounds. Since What's Left began in 2019 I've been reporting on a small fraction of the local news. We aim for stories that tend not to be covered (or, at least, not well) by more mainstream media, and which we find important. I enjoy all three modes for different reasons that are too mundane to share.

What might you like people to know about you as a writer? What you like people to know about you as a person?

I'm a Leo so it's been a huge mistake letting me talk about myself this much. That is to say, I've said plenty. When we run into each other, let's talk about plants or ending capitalism.

YpsiWrites' theme this year is "Write for Change." Given this theme, what type of change do you think your writing inspires and what are your reasons for doing this writing?

I think by far the biggest impact we have had at What's Left is simply raising awareness. For instance when we wrote about a certain ex-mayor's pattern of anti-Blackness in office... nobody is going to read that and think 'wow this is well-written;' they'll think 'oh wow I had no idea; that needs to change' and that's good. That's the point. People need to know certain things; and the way our government and culture is set up makes that hard.

I volunteered for Anne Brown in 2018 when she ran for mayor. I saw then that if voters understood their choice for that office, they would have chosen Anne... and yet she lost that race. It was a matter of information and lack thereof.
