Green Spring Sounds by Pam McCombs

Little green spikes

Breaking free of winter freeze

Pushing toward a warmer breeze

Grass is greener

Both blue and crab

Eliminating crabgrass before it strangles

all gardeners pledge to mangle

New green shoots

Freeing themselves of winter soil

Rising up to Sulla’s smile

Weeds rise up as well

Dandelions, thistles, and creeping charlie

Must be left to feed the bees

that fertilize all the flowers

Slender verdant stems

Sprouting through the muddy mess

Stretching against the winter mesh

Crocus, daffodils, trilliums and tulips

Growing taller, taller to us

Spreading leaves and petals

bursting into vibrant colors

Bushes and trees with new green leaves

As April turns to May with showers

Daffodills, crocus, and hyacinths

Fill the air with fragrant scents

Spring peepers, chorus, and wood frogs

Trilling and creaking along with

Cardinals Chirping

Redwing blackbirds yodaling

All together make

A backyard symphony

of green spring sounds
