Primary Genres: poetry

Which kind of writing your favorite and why?

Poetry is my genre. I am a reader of fiction, creative nonfiction, essays and journalism, and anything my students want to show me. But poetry remains that special genre, which lights up the dusty, tangled parts of my brain in a way nothing else can.

What part of the writing process do you enjoy the most and why? And/or what part of the process do you find the most challenging and why?

When I think of sitting down to write in a romantic way, I always imagine revision. I rarely sit down meaning to write new work. Poems tend to come unbidden, and first drafts end up on receipts, napkins, or the notes app.
