Scarred Identity

Starting in September 2026, The EMU College in Prison Writing Club, with support from YpsiWrites, and in collaboration with IHM Sisters, Monroe, MI, proudly announces Scarred Identity, an exhibition of creative writing.

The exhibit will feature poems as art objects, audio works of fiction and creative nonfiction, as well as zines, chapbooks, posters, and other ephemera by the Writing Club at Women’s Huron Valley, Michigan’s only women’s prison.

The Writing Club dedicates the show to their dear friend and club member, Zella Hoath (1990-2026), who Heather McKee explains, was “a bright light—often misunderstood, discussed, misrepresented—a light that cannot be distinguished because her seed was planted in so many.” Lilly Xiong emphasizes the importance of “a space to spread awareness of those who feel alone. Suicide is real. You matter. We matter. We don’t have to exist apart.”
