Primary Genres: poetry
Which is genre your favorite and why?
I primarily write poetry, and lean towards short-form or more compact pieces. I have some limited experience with playwriting and short stories, both heavily influence by a more poetic style of writing. Poetry is by far my favorite as it is both singular and universal, specific and open-ended, concrete and confusing. Poetry creates a moment between the text and reader and that poem exists in the space between the two. It's a conversation that exists beyond you and with someone you may never meet. I find that both intimidating and beautiful.
What part of the writing process do you enjoy the most and why? And what part of the process do you find the most challenging and why?
I love the "inspiration hunter-gatherer" part of the writing process. I love reading a novel and finding a new word or phrase that gets me thinking in a new way. I tend to take a lot of screenshots of headlines, articles, photos, or captions that get my thoughts jumping in a million different directions. I'm most challenged by accepting a piece is finished and setting my pen down. In truth, I feel like I could edit and re-edit a piece until there's almost nothing left.
